Dog Handling Soldier Will Not Return To Iraq After Allegations Of Abuse

A U.S. solider convicted of abusing an inmate in Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison and who was supposed to return to the country with his military unit will not be going back, the army said Friday.

Spec. Santos Cardona boarded a plane Monday bound for Iraq, where he was assigned to the 23rd Military Police Company. He and his unit were in Kuwait preparing for movement into Iraq when the army decided Friday that for safety reasons he would not go into Iraq.

"We are extremely concerned, in light of the publicity about his situation, about his personal safety," said Paul Boyce, an army spokesman at the Pentagon. "So for the good of the soldier, as well as the situation, he has been stopped in Kuwait pending review by the chain of command."

Cardona, a dog handler in the army, was found guilty of allowing his dog to bark in the face of a prisoner who was kneeling. Another soldier had requested the action.

The army believes Cardona and others in his unit would be endangered if he deployed into Iraq because he might be targeted by insurgents who know of his link to the Abu Ghraib abuse.

In an interview with Time magazine, friends of Cardona said he feared he and his unit might be targeted because he appears in at least one al-Qaeda propaganda video depicting the abuse at Abu Ghraib.

A military jury sentenced Cardona in June to 90 days of hard labour with no prison time.

Cardona became the 11th soldier convicted of crimes stemming from the abuse of inmates at the prison outside Baghdad in late 2003 and early 2004.

Cardona was cleared on seven other counts, including accusations of letting his dog bite a detainee and conspiring with another dog handler to frighten prisoners.

Bought time they did something right.

Yep, but I feel it will make little difference. I been watching the news wires, and it appears the Sunnis are tightening the noose around Baghdad. I found a new propaganda video of Juba killing a Tank Commander.

The war is effectively lost.

I have to agree, hopefully when the Dems take the house this week it'll mean a pullout.
