Japan Approves Sanctions Against North Korea

TOKYO (AP) - Japan's cabinet decided Friday to close the country's ports to North Korean ships and ban trade with the country in response to the North's claimed nuclear test this week, a news report said.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet approved the sanctions, which also include a six-month ban on travel to Japan by all North Korean government officials, during a meeting early Friday, Kyodo News agency reported.

Cabinet Office officials were not immediately available for comment.

The move was the toughest response so far by any country to North Korea's nuclear test Monday, which has yet to be confirmed. North Korea warned Thursday it would take strong "countermeasures" if Japan went ahead with the new sanctions.

Because Japan's trade with North Korea is limited, Abe faced little domestic opposition to cutting it off.

Tokyo already had limited sanctions in place against North Korea, imposed after the North test-fired seven missiles into waters between Japan and the Korean Peninsula in July.

Those measures included banning the Mangyongbong-92 - a North Korean ferry that served as a major conduit of trade between the two countries - from entering Japanese waters.

The travel ban went into effect Wednesday when the government first announced the new sanctions plan, Kyodo said. The trade ban and the closure of Japan's ports go into force Saturday, it said.

Japan is tighting the screws.

It will matter little in the end run unless China follows suite. However, if Kim snaps, Seoul goes up in flames.
